Separating

So my husband and I separated 2.5 months ago but at this moment we are still living together with our two children. I instigated the split and I am the primary care provider as he often works away and works long days when he is local. He is refusing to leave so I said I would stay with friends but come home when he is local each morning to take care of the children so he can go to work and I would have them after school until he gets home. On the days he is working away I would stay at the home. However I have now been advised against this so and I’m now wondering where do I stand legally?
